FAQ

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is a very safe healing modality if performed by a licensed and trained practitioner. Practitioners who are trained know proper placement of acupuncture needles in various areas
of the body. The practitioner should always evaluate at each visit the appropriateness of performing acupuncture on the client on that particular day then proceed as needed.

There are some suggestions that a client can do on their part to make the treatment most effective and enjoyable. The first is to relax. There is no need to be frightened. Ask your practitioner any questions you have along the way so that you can get the most benefit possible from the treatment.

Secondly, do not change position or more suddenly. If you are uncomfortable, tell the doctor. If you feel dizzy, nausea, a cold sweat, short of breath or faint- these are all signs of nervousness and the practitioner should immediately remove the needles and administer comfort measures to ease the patient. You should experience only a sense of relaxation and well-being after the treatment. If there is pain or marked discomfort, discuss it with the doctor so that adjustments can be made to the treatment protocol.

What is homotoxicology?

Homotoxicology, the theory of disease developed by Dr. Hans-Heinrich Reckeweg (1905-1985), understands illness as the human body’s defense against toxic substances (homotoxins) that threaten to overwhelm the intercellular matrix. According to this therapeutic model, the type and severity of an illness are determined by the duration and intensity of the toxic loading in relationship to the body’s ability for detoxification.

“Clogging” of the matrix obstructs the movement of nutrients from blood vessels into the cells, disrupting the body’s homeostasis and preventing important biological processes. The resulting disturbances, which eventually manifest as disease, are the body’s attempt to restore a state of biochemical balance. The goal for any medical treatment is to restore health. This can be achieved through adjunctive homotoxicology.

What is Functional Endocrinology and how can it assist me?

Endocrinology is the study of the glands of the body and the hormones secreted by them. Studying and identifying the changes in the output of the various endocrine glands, that are not diagnosed
as diseased, is called "Functional Endocrinology". This is accomplished by using a more stringent standard than  the "normal" result range, which for example is 4-11 for white blood cells (WBC),
and instead using a "healthy" range of 5-8.

The well-trained and astute clinician with the knowledge of functional endocrinology will note that, along with other diagnostic indications, a WBC of less than 5, indicates chronic infection, even in
the absence of obvious symptomology in the patient. Early treatment of asymptomatic alterations
of endocrine function may prevent or delay later disease states. Often patients with functional endocrine disorders are not treated because no disease has been diagnosed, even though they often suffer from such symptoms as fatigue or depression.

The practice of Functional Endocrinology requires the physician to completely and thoroughly understand human physiology and metabolism, and the often complex interactions between the systems of  the body, and of disease.
